Ofelia's life seemed like a piece of a fairy tale. She was born into a pureblood family with loving parents, but, like a fairy tale, the happiness was short lived. When she was very young, her father died of an illness. She lived alone with her mother Carmen in Spain until she turned eight. That year her mother met a captain in the Spanish army. Although Ofelia wasn't fond of him, she was unable to do anything other than watch them get married and refuse to call him father. He had them move out to the country to the town where he was stationed.
The summer Ofelia recieved her letter, she was nervous. Her mother had not told the Captain of their magical heritage. How would he react? She showed the letter only to her mother, who said she would handle it and swore her to secrecy. She learned later that he was told she was to be enrolled at a bording school in England, which wasn't exactly a lie. Her mother took her to buy her school things and they stayed in London until it was time to leave.
Her first year at hogwarts was uneventful. Ofelia did, however, begin having strange dreams about the moon and a secret kingdom underground. When she returned home for Christmas, she asked her mother about it, but her mother denied any knowledge of such a kingdom. Still, Ofelia couldn't shake the feeling that she'd heard of it before. She found the answer while reading her older book of fairy tales. In it, she read of the young princess of the kingdom who was too curious about the surface world. Ofelia memorised every detail of the story, looking for a reason for her dreams.
That vacation also marked the first time she wandered into the forest surrounding the town and discovered the labyrinth. Her curiosity surpassing her common sense, she wandered in and was lost for the rest of the day. When she was found just outside the labyrinth's gate that night, she couldn't for the life of her remember what had transpired inside. Only that she somehow knew of a birthmark in the shape of a crescent moon on her right shoulder that even her mother had forgotten. And every year when she returns to Hogwarts, the dreams return...
